SPUC has launched a new postcard campaign urging supporters to write to the Health Secretary and call for an end to DIY abortion.
At SPUC’s 2023 National Conference, the Justice for Baby Lily campaign was launched calling for the end of DIY abortion, a scheme first introduced in 2020 in response to lockdown. The policy allows women to self-induce chemical abortion at home without in-person supervision.
DIY abortion, or the “pills by post” policy, has subsequently led to more abortions and more women being put at risk, most notably in the case of Baby Lily.
This year, Carla Foster, a mother from Staffordshire, was sentenced to prison time after she lied to provider BPAS to obtain abortion drugs well past the legal limit for abortion. Her daughter Lily was born dead at 32-34 weeks’ gestation. Several other cases are pending in the courts.
In the aftermath of Carla Foster’s conviction, which later saw her released early from prison, the abortion industry is using the case to call for the decriminalisation of abortion, a move slammed by SPUC.
Because DIY abortion is morally unsustainable, SPUC, not wanting to see women and unborn babies exposed to further menace, is calling for the policy to be scrapped.
SPUC has produced a postcard allowing supporters to call on the Health Secretary to end DIY abortion. After returning the completed postcard to SPUC HQ, the postcard will be delivered to the Health Secretary, or relevant minister in a devolved government.
Postcards can be ordered online for personal use and distribution in supporter communities. SPUC requests that all completed postcards be returned to SPUC HQ by 30 November.

Alithea Williams, SPUC’s Public Policy Manager, said: “Supporter help is needed urgently this autumn as we step up our campaign to end DIY abortion for good.
“Since 2020, cynical abortion providers have sought to manipulate the Government’s disastrous abortion policy for their own ends, now using the case of Carla Foster to decriminalise abortion and make it available on demand, potentially with no time limits.
“BPAS claims that there is a ‘concerted drive towards criminalising women suspected of ending a pregnancy’. This is nonsense, denying the reality of the situation that BPAS and others brought about themselves by putting women like Carla Foster at further risk in the first place.
“Removing abortion from the criminal law wouldn’t have stopped Baby Lily from being aborted. On the contrary, decriminalisation would lead to even more deaths and even more heartbroken women. What needs to be removed is this policy which means women can obtain abortion pills without checks and take them over the legal limit.”
