Scrap DIY abortion NOW, says SPUC, as another woman goes on trial after death of baby

A woman has appeared at Teesside Crown Court in Middlesbrough charged with unlawfully carrying out an abortion on her child. A trial is expected to take place in January 2024.

Bethany Cox, 22, has denied that she administered poison in July 2020 with the intent to destroy her unborn child that was capable of being born alive.

The case follows the similar case of Carla Foster who was sentenced to 28 months in prison for falsely obtaining abortion drugs past the legal limit, ending the life of her unborn baby when she was 8 months pregnant, as reported by SPUC.

Foster was later released following an appeal.

Cox’s case is the fourth such prosecution in eight months. SPUC has pointed out that this is the inevitable result of the Government’s pills-by-post scheme introduced during the pandemic in 2020 – allowing women to be sent abortion drugs without seeing a medical professional in person to establish the unborn baby’s age of gestation.

SPUC comment

A SPUC spokesperson said: “These tragic cases show just what a disaster DIY abortion has been for women and their unborn babies, which shameless abortion lobbyists are now using to advocate for a total decriminalising of abortion. This was undoubtedly their plan all along.

“The abortion industry has never cared about the wellbeing of women, especially over these last three years, when it took the opportunity that the pandemic offered to pursue its ideological urge to normalise and increase abortion beyond the millions of already killed unborn babies.

“Even the judge in the Carla Foster case slammed senior abortion lobbyists’ ‘inappropriate’ attempt to influence court proceedings. Previously, 70% of respondents to a 2021 Government consultation said that DIY home abortion should be scrapped.

“In light of mounting prosecutions, SPUC once again calls on the Government to immediately cease the dangerous pills-by-post scheme and protect women from the cynical machinations of the abortion industry.”
