Pro-life Catholic becomes Premier of New South Wales

Dominic Perrottet, a Roman Catholic and professed pro-lifer, has just become the 46th Premier of New South Wales in Australia.

Following the resignation of Gladys Berejiklian, who is facing an investigation into an alleged “breach of public trust”, Mr. Perrottet has been elected Premier of New South Wales.

Premier Perrottet is an avowed Catholic conservative who is pro-life.

“I am very proud of the fact that I have a strong Christian faith”, Premier Perrottet told journalists, in response to questions about his Catholicism and how its social teaching might inform his leadership.

In 2019, Mr. Perrottet voted against abortion, stating that he could not support a law that stops “the beating heart of an unborn child”.

Before he was elected Premier, a pro-abortion online petition claiming to champion “diversity” was launched to prevent Mr. Perrottet from being elected, since he is “a white, middle-aged, privileged male who is openly religious”.

The petition gained over 17,000 signatures.

However, following his election, Premier Perrottet has stated that, “in the main, people right across our state believe in freedom of religion and freedom of the opportunity to serve in public life regardless of what your ethnic background is or what your religious values are”.

SPUC comment

A SPUC spokesperson said: “SPUC welcomes Premier Dominic Perrottet’s pro-life views and hopes that he will uphold the right to life of the unborn, as well as the right of women to be protected from abortion.

“Despite the efforts of the bigoted petition – which absurdly claimed to advocate diversity while openly stating that there is no place for religious people in politics – freedom of religion and freedom of conscience prevailed in the end.

“We sincerely hope that, in Premier Perrottet, the unborn have a champion who will do his utmost to represent them in New South Wales.”
