Tiny baby Lucas was born 4 months premature and weighed just over 1lb

Tiny baby Lucas was born 16 weeks premature and weighed 1lb 6oz – roughly the same weight as a loaf of bread.

Lucas’s parents, Allan and Laura, from Skipton found out about him 22 weeks into the pregnancy.

When Lucas was born prematurely at 24 weeks, on 24 June 2021, the challenges he would face were evident.

“We have had six blood transfusions and an infection along the way”, said Laura.

“It’s safe to say we have had our ups and downs. But Lucas is an absolute fighter and is getting stronger and bigger every day.”

After he was born, Lucas was taken straight away to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Bradford Royal Infirmary for specialised treatment.

He is doing well and now weighs 5lb. His parents visit him every day.

“We just can’t wait for Lucas to come home, but we know he will come home when he is ready. He’s in the right place now”, said Laura.

Dad Allan is an avid runner and will take part in the Great North Run this weekend to raise money for Bradford Hospital’s Charity Big Neonatal Appeal to enable more parent accommodation that will permit parents to stay overnight at the unit so they can be close to their babies.

SPUC comment

A SPUC spokesperson said: “It is incredible to see tiny baby Lucas overcome such odds. And it is moving to see just how dedicated and attentive his loving parents are.

“And thanks to great neonatal care, Lucas has pulled through.

“Life matters. While the world struggles, Lucas provides us with hope – and so, too, his parents, Allan and Laura, who have brought this wonderful gift into the world.

“SPUC wishes them all the best, now and in the future.”
