Olympian speaks out about her mental devastation after abortion

United States hurdler Brianna McNeal has spoken out about the devastating aftermath of an abortion.

U.S. hurdler Brianna McNeal has described the horrid aftermath of the abortion that led to her missing a doping test in 2020.

She had an abortion because she wanted to complete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, now taking place currently in 2021.

McNeal, a successful athlete who won a gold medal at the 2016 Olympics, said her abortion left her “traumatised,” “shaken” and “disoriented”, which resulted in her not turning up to a doping test.

Sports journalist Julia Macur, who interviewed McNeal, states that the abortion “really affected her life”, it “left her medicated in bed” and “suffering from depression…

“She said she was even more crushed when the Games were postponed until 2021 because the delay meant she could have had the baby after all.”

The mental impact of abortion

The evidence-based review Abortion and Women’s Health reveals the horrific impact that abortion can have on the mental health of women.

Key findings include:

  • A woman who undergoes an abortion is six times more likely to commit suicide than a woman who gives birth.
  • A woman is 30% more likely to suffer from depression compared to a woman who gives birth.
  • A woman is 25% more likely to suffer from anxiety compared to a woman who gives birth.
  • A woman who has had an abortion is at a higher risk of psychiatric admission compared to a woman who gives birth.

Lasting trauma

Michael Robinson, SPUC Director of Communications, said: “Abortion is a tragedy for everyone involved, most obviously the mother and her child.

“Disgracefully, the impact of abortion on women’s mental health is barely covered by media sources. But as Brianna’s own story highlights, the mental consequences can be devastating.

“SPUC endeavours to inform women as well as others about these effects, which are consistently covered up by the abortion industry and its advocates.

“While a gold medal is a great achievement, the mental trauma of an abortion may be lasting – and the destruction of an innocent child is something that can never be undone.”
