Tim Farron declares himself pro-choice

17 May 2017

Mr Farron seems to have caved in to pressure to repudiate his pro-life position.

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron has said for the first time that he is "pro-choice" after the Guardian confronted him with an old interview where he described abortion as "wrong".

Speaking about his faith soon after he had become the MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale in Cumbria, Mr Farron told the Salvation Army's magazine: "Take the issue of abortion. Personally I wish I could argue it away. Abortion is wrong. Society has to climb down from the position that says there is nothing objectionable about abortion before a certain time. If abortion is wrong, it is wrong at any time."

When asked his views on the subject at the beginning of the election campaign, Mr Farron said that he supported a woman's right to an abortion, but stopped short of definitively endorsing it.

However, when contacted by the Guardian on Tuesday, Mr Farron issued a categorical response. "I am pro-choice. I believe that abortion should be safe and legal and that the limit should be set by science," he said.

Reality hasn't changed

SPUC’s Campaign Director Antonia Tully expressed her disappointment at Mr Farron's comments:

“Tim Farron may be changing his mind about abortion, but the grim reality of abortion isn't changing. Each and every week 4000 unborn babies are killed in Britain and their mothers carry the emotional scars, often for life.

Use your vote

"Abortion is the No. 1 human rights scandal of our time and the political elite in this country continually turn a blind eye to it. But ordinary people care about this issue and SPUC is encouraging them to make the plight of unborn children a voting priority. SPUC is reaching out to caring citizens in Britain who will not betray unborn children and their mothers at the ballot box.

"We've sent out thousands of "value your vote" leaflets to our volunteers who will be distributing them in their neighbourhood."

How ironic that the political parties most attached to 'a woman's right to choose' (aka abortion without limits) tend to be the same ones who say that they will lower the voting age - as the LibDems have pledged. The right to vote but not the right to be born.

I'll be abstaining and will spoil my ballot paper - there are no pro- life candidates where I live. Mr Farron cannot seriously be taken seriously about his 'religious' views, Teresa May is a sadistic fox killer who gloats over animal suffering and Jeremy Corbin condone killing unborn babies at all stages of their development in the womb. These politicians make up a fine rag bag of demons.
