Thug threatened to kill unborn baby after pregnant partner refused abortion

Sheffield Crown Court has heard how a violent thug threatened to kill his unborn baby and his pregnant partner after she refused to have an abortion. Michael Robinson, SPUC Director of Communications, said: “We cannot ignore the fact that violence against pregnant women and their unborn children is an increasing issue. Vicious threats such as this prove just how vital it is to protect vulnerable pregnant women.”

Ian Buchanan, from Sheffield, told his partner that she had to abort their unborn baby after being informed that she was pregnant. Buchanan, 41, was eager to re-commence his relationship with another partner during this time.

After his partner refused to have an abortion and continued with her pregnancy, it is reported that Buchanan became paranoid that news of her pregnancy would spread.

Buchanan hounded his pregnant partner with abusive and violent messages, threatening to stab her and kill their unborn baby. It is reported that Buchanan threatened to poison the pregnant woman’s dogs and burn her house down. He appeared at her home stressing that he could not be known as the father of their unborn baby.

Buchanan was charged with harassment with fear of violence and has been sentenced to 28 weeks in prison.

Growing violence against pregnant women and unborn children

SPUC has been reporting on the rise of violence against pregnant women, which has surfaced across Britain, especially during the Coronavirus lockdowns.

A rise in domestic violence during the COVID-19 lockdown has become increasingly evident as the UK’s largest domestic abuse charity, Refuge, has reported a 700% increase in activity on its helpline website during one single day.

Earlier this year, SPUC reported on the devastating case of a Manchester woman, Chloe Lomas, who was pressured into having an abortion against her will after an abusive ex-partner subjected her to a 77-day long campaign of terror. This included being bombarded with 4,208 phone calls and text messages where the abusive ex threatened to kill Miss Lomas, her family and her unborn baby.

SPUC’s Mr Robinson added: “Abortion, as this case shows, is part of a broader abuse of women subject to threats, both verbal and bodily, often leading to coercion into the termination of a baby.”
