One of the most premature babies ever born in Scotland leaves hospital after 132-day battle against the odds

Baby Sofia, born at 22 weeks at University Wishaw Hospital, Lanarkshire, last October, has finally gone home with her parents after spending over four months in hospital.

Sofia weighed just 1lb when she was born 22 weeks early in Scotland. Egija, her mother, recalls that “Sofia was the size of a hand, so fragile and small and her skin was see-through. I had to wait a week to hold her for the first time because she was so fragile.”

Because Sofia was so weak, being given only a ten per cent chance of survival by doctors, she was kept in intensive care for several weeks.

“She was hooked up to lots of machines and she was ventilated for several weeks to help her breathe”, said Egija.

“The first time they tried to get her to breathe on her own, she only lasted twenty minutes then her heart rate dropped and I felt like I was losing her. I nearly fainted I was so scared.”

Enduring such complications as a heart defect, stage one brain bleeds, retinopathy of prematurity, and infections, Sofia overcame the challenges of being born premature and has now gone home with her parents.

“Once I was able to hold her, they couldn’t get her out of my hands”, said Egija. “To all other mummies going into such an early labour, there is hope. Never give up.”

SPUC comment

A SPUC spokesperson said: “Sofia’s story is miraculous. The medical expertise that saved her life is a testament to the professionalism of her doctors and nurses.

“The love and dedication of her parents are no less inspiring. Egija spent up to 16 hours a day beside Sofia in hospital. SPUC is so happy for Sofia and her family. They can now enjoy their life together.

“We should never forget that life is a gift. However fragile a life can sometimes be, love is stronger and cannot be overcome.”
