London abortion clinic closes

A London abortion clinic where thousands of unborn children were killed has closed. Michael Robinson, SPUC Director of Communications said: “2021 has kicked off with some fantastic victories for the pro-life movement. This abortion clinic has been harming women and killing thousands of unborn children for years. It is a great relief to see this clinic close its doors.”

The BPAS abortion clinic in Streatham, South London, performed 4,404 abortions in 2018, including 491 late-term abortions on babies at 20 weeks’ gestation or later.

The Streatham abortion clinic performed the second largest number of late-term abortions in the UK in 2018.

The clinic has now been closed for several weeks and the premises are up for sale.

Streatham scandal

During 2020, SPUC reported on the scandalous health and safety failings of the Streatham abortion clinic exposed by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). In its report, published 29 January 2020, the CQC said that the Streatham clinic required improvement on safety, effectiveness, and responsiveness.

Among the issues highlighted in the report were:

  • Staff had not completed immediate life support training, sepsis training, or medicine management training
  • Some staff had insufficient safeguarding training
  • Not all equipment was in good working order or had been calibrated
  • The service did not always manage patient safety incidents well. Staff did not always report incidents.

A negative culture was also reported by staff. The report stated: “Most staff we spoke with, told us they felt the culture was reactive rather than proactive, with a culture of blame and harassment and this had created an unsupportive and demoralising environment at the centre.”

These clinics stay closed

At the start of 2020, five Marie Stopes abortion clinics across Birmingham and the Black Country closed their doors after years of killing unborn children.

SPUC’s Mr Robinson said: “The closure of these abortion clinics across the past year is a great victory for the pro-life movement. It is vital that these clinics stay closed and that unborn children and their mothers are spared from the violence of abortion.”
