42.6 million abortions in 2020 – the leading cause of death worldwide

42.6 million abortions took place around the world in 2020, the website Worldometer reports. Abortion is still the leading cause of death worldwide.

The data was made available by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The number of abortions dwarf deaths from cancer (8.2 million), road traffic fatalities (1.4 million) and those who have passed away from COVID-19 (1.8 million).

The WHO states that on average 125,000 abortions are performed every day globally, while 22% of pregnancies in the USA result in abortion.

According to Worldometer, across the world over the past six days, since the start of the new year, over 640,000 babies have died because of abortion. That number is increasing every second.

SPUC comment

A SPUC spokesperson said: “2020 was a terrible year, especially for the world’s unborn. The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked hardship and death on a global scale. But amidst this challenge, we should not forget the world’s unborn who are attacked every day.

“42.6 million babies lost through abortion is a catastrophic death toll.

“Last year, we also found out that 209,519 unborn children were aborted in England and Wales in 2019, as reported by SPUC – the highest number since the Abortion Act came into force in 1968.

“These statistics are sobering and heart-breaking. They underline the challenge pro-lifers around the world face in 2021.

“This year we must act on these figures and advance the pro-life cause with renewed vigour and determination. We must defend the innocent and the vulnerable. We must not lose hope.”
