SPUC to launch 2022 election campaign after Northern Ireland assembly abortion debate

SPUC are to launch an election campaign to build a solid pro-life majority in the Northern Ireland Assembly almost two years ahead of scheduled elections in 2022. The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) made its announcement Tuesday 2 June 2020, after the Stormont Assembly debated a motion rejecting the regulations imposed on the Province by the Westminster Government.

The Motion rejecting “the imposition of abortion legislation” was adopted by 46 votes to 40. An amendment from Sinn Féin which attempted to remove this wording was also voted down by 52 votes to 32.

Liam Gibson, a spokesman for SPUC in Northern Ireland said that the pro-life movement could not afford to wait until 2022 to inform voters about where their representatives stand on the abortion issue.

Mr Gibson said: “We’re calling on voters now to reject politicians who have fail to respect the right to life of unborn children.

“In the 52 days following the regulations coming into effect, 129 children have been killed by abortion. This is a shocking statistic but experience shows that as abortion is normalised it becomes increasingly widespread and evermore extreme. There are more than 500 abortions every day in Britain. Each one of these is the killing of an innocent child and that can never be justified. There is no acceptable level of violence against children.

“This debate in the Assembly has highlighted the extreme nature of the abortion regulations that Westminster has imposed on Northern Ireland. This regime represents the systematic extermination of unborn babies, especially the weakest and most vulnerable. The regulations permit abortion virtually on demand up to the 24th week and in many cases even up to birth.”

Mr Gibson continued: “Any politician who supports the killing of innocent children does not deserve to hold elected office. They should be rejected by the voters regardless of the other policies they promote. People must remember what happened today in the Assembly at the time of the next Stormont election.

“Legislation that permits the killing of innocent children is completely illegitimate. An unjust law is no law at all. If the politicians won’t change unjust legislation, it’s up to the people to change their politicians.”
