Irish mum refused to give up on “miracle baby”

Claire Mcdaid, from Donegal in Ireland, revealed that doctors advised her to abort her unborn child after a scan at 30 weeks revealed developmental issues.

During a scan of her unborn baby daughter, T.J., Claire was told that her baby’s head was swollen and that her brain showed no signs of life.

“There was no hope for her”, said doctors.

“They told us that day that this is a very sick child”, Claire recalls. “They told us to go home and think about going to England to terminate her.”

But T.J.’s parents refused to give up on their daughter, who was born on 7 October 2020.

She’s their “little miracle baby”.

Although T.J., suffering from spina bifida meningocele, struggles with movement, currently being unable to move her legs or waist, she survived the birth and now has a chance to live a full life.

“She is the happiest little lady, and she deserves the best we can get for her”, said her mother.

Claire hopes to raise enough money to gain specialist treatment abroad, so T.J. won’t have to spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair.

SPUC comment

A SPUC spokesperson said: “Every child, every person, no matter how disabled and apparently weak, should be given a chance to thrive, whatever obstacles might appear to be in the way.

“While doctors, in this case so quick to condemn little T.J. to death, gave up on her, her parents stood their ground, realising what a gift life is, especially their daughter, not to be given up without a fight.

“While the fight is ongoing, for T.J. as well as those who wish to see a world without abortion, we must not lose sight of this wonderful gift that is life.”
