Roe vs Wade OVERTURNED: “A momentous day”, says SPUC

The US Supreme Court has confirmed its decision to overturn Roe vs Wade, the infamous 1973 ruling that imposed abortion throughout the United States. It has been estimated that over 60 million babies have been aborted in the US since then.

“This is a momentous day”, says SPUC, though “the fight for the right to life of the unborn continues”.

Today, June 24th, the US Supreme Court has voted to overturn Roe vs Wade. Earlier this year, a leaked initial draft majority opinion indicated that the majority of the nine Supreme Court Justices were in favour of overturning the 1973 ruling, as reported by SPUC.

In the leaked draft, Justice Samuel Alito stated that Roe vs. Wade was “egregiously wrong… Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences.”

“We hold that Roe… must be overruled”, he continued. “The [US] Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision.”

In 2021, the US state of Mississippi asked the Supreme Court to overturn Roe vs. Wade in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organisation.

The overturning of Roe vs Wade means that there is now no guarantee of federal constitutional protection of abortion. Each US state is now permitted to decide its own abortion law.

Anticipating the repeal of Roe vs Wade, a dozen states have already voted to restrict abortion.

Pro-abortion violence

Since the initial draft opinion leak, pro-abortion violence has erupted around the US. At least 17 pro-life pregnancy centres have been firebombed within a month, including on 3 June, when pro-abortion activists attacked The Capitol Hill Pregnancy Center in Washington, D.C.

Pro-life offices have also been targeted, including Wisconsin Family Action, which suffered an arson attack. A pro-abortion militant also left graffiti on a wall. It read: “If abortions aren’t safe, then you aren’t either.”

Then, last week, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh was targeted for assassination by a pro-abortion activist, who was arrested and charged. Justice Kavanaugh is reportedly pro-life, as well as Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, all nominated by President Donald Trump.

In October 2020, SPUC’s Daniel Frampton observed that President Trump’s Supreme Court nominations might “well prove an important moment for the anti-abortion cause”

While “Trump is a deeply flawed man”, wrote Dr Frampton, “it may be that a flawed man can still perform an invaluable service, and in doing so, save a multitude of souls – and perhaps even his own”.

“A momentous day”

SPUC’s Michael Robinson, Executive Director (Public Affairs and Legal Services), said: “This is a momentous day for justice, the rule of law and, most of all, for the US unborn and their mothers. In the face of violence, intimidation and disgraceful European Parliament interference in the affairs of a sovereign nation, the US Supreme Court has rightly ruled in favour of the US Constitution. Justice has prevailed.

“During the past month, since it became known that the Court was poised to repeal Roe vs Wade, pro-abortion activists waged a campaign of violence to thwart justice.

“As SPUC has stated before, abortion is violence against unborn babies and their mothers. We should not be surprised when abortion apologists, therefore, turn to violence to threaten pro-lifers. The pro-abortion lobby has shown its true colours.

“Of course, the fight for the right to life of the unborn continues, in the US and elsewhere, including in the UK. The pro-abortion pushback might be extreme, but pro-lifers must stand their ground. Violence must not win.

“SPUC supporters and other pro-lifers can take heart from this decision, a decision that, while not constituting total victory, will undoubtedly save millions of lives. We are moving in the right direction, and we must always hope and never give up. Unborn babies and their families are counting on us.”
