Yorkshire couple create winter wonderland to support York baby unit

A Yorkshire couple has turned their garden into a festive winter wonderland to raise money for York Hospital’s Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) for the third year running.

Dee Moore and his wife, Christine, of Brayton near Selby, have decorated their garden with Christmas lights and ornaments for the last ten years.

Mr Moore, a self-employed landscaper, has spent countless hours setting up the Santas and stars that light up the garden every year.

As Mrs Moore explained: “Throughout November, whilst most of us are rushing home after a busy day… my husband can be found soaking wet through, freezing cold, up a ladder, in the trees, or on his hands and knees outside in the garden.”

The couple will once again be raising funds for the York SCBU Support Group – a charity that supports the relief, care and treatment of premature and sick newborn babies.

“This is our third year of raising money for the support group and over the last two years we have raised nearly £3,000”, said Mrs Moore.

A little girl named Esta lives in the same cul-de-sac as the Moores. She was born 13 weeks premature and spent the first three months of her life in SCBU over the Christmas period.

Mrs Moore explains that, when Esta first came home with her family, they lit up the street with their amazing decorations in her honour.

“As Esta has grown up and her mum and dad have told her that we left the lights on for her arrival home, she and her older sister Isla have been my husband’s number one fans.”

SPUC comment

A SPUC spokesperson said: “The Moores are bringing the true meaning of Christmas to life, putting smiles on the faces of all those who see their fantastic garden decorations, as well as raising funds to help vulnerable babies.

“SPUC congratulates the Moores and the staff of the York SCBU for their dedication to such a worthwhile cause.”
