2008 sponsored event: Andes mountains, Argentina

climb3.jpgAn SPUC supporter has climbed the world's highest mountain outside the Himalayas to raise money for the society. Mr Mark Norbury of Vancouver, BC, Canada, reached the top of Aconcagua (22,800 ft.) in the Andes, Argentina, on 27 January. Mark had to contend with altitude sickness, windburn and sunburn. He said: "Nearing the summit I felt really dizzy with the altitude and my body kept telling me to just lie down and rest, but I continued on, one step at a time. I never once seriously considered giving up. I'd come this far and was so determined to reach the top. I crawled on to the summit at 4 pm."
