Peter Smith is secretary of SPUC Evangelicals. Born in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia,
he graduated from the University of Tasmania
as a bachelor of engineering in 1973. For 16 years he worked in the automotive
industry in middle and senior management positions in private industry and the
public service.
He was born again of the spirit of God on 28 November 1980 and he says: "I was saved the first time I heard the Gospel." He moved to Scotland in 1986 to attend the Bible Training Institute in Glasgow where he received a BTI honors diploma in 1988. In the same year he received the Cambridge Diploma in religious studies.
Peter saw a pro-life film which deeply moved him. He joined SPUC in 1988 and set up an SPUC branch in Ayr. In 1990 he moved back to Tasmania where he worked in his spare time for the pro-life group, eventually becoming its president. He also travelled widely speaking for the pro-life movement in churches of various denominations. In April 1994 Peter addressed the Fourth World Pro-life Congress in Sydney before returning to live in Scotland.
In September 1994 Peter Smith started working full time for SPUC as a pro-life activist. From January 1995 he has lobbied at the United Nations and helps lead the pro-life/pro-family groups that lobby there at world conferences. He also preaches in many churches in the UK and overseas for SPUC
