With the death of Ian Brown, SPUC has lost
one of its staunchest members. Ian died early on Sunday 20th November; he had
been ill with cancer of the oesophagus since 2003. He and his wife, Esther,
first became involved with the Society as a result of the support they received
after the birth of their first son, Daniel, who had Down's Syndrome. Ian went
on to work for the Handicap Division (as it was then) and later became a
founder member of SPUC Evangelicals, which he chaired from 1995 to 2002.
Ian's pro-life convictions were an
essential part of his Christian faith: he held passionately to the biblical
view that every human being, of whatever age or condition, is made inviolably
in God's image. A man of immense courage, he held fast to his faith in some
tough settings - as a soldier in the Royal Horse Artillery, a worker with the
London City Mission and an ordained minister, first with the Nazarene Church
and then in the Church of England.
Ian is survived by Esther and their two sons,
Mark and Samuel. Daniel died in 1994.
