Patron: Mr David Andrew

by George and Jan Bell

Mr David AndrewMr David Andrew became one of our Patrons in 2008. David grew up in Bellshill, Lanarkshire,1 and became a Christian through the ministry of Dr Billy Graham in 1966.

David now lives with his wife Agnes in Bellshill, near Glasgow, where they have been for the last few years. They moved there after nearly 30 years away from their home town to care for an elderly parent, and ended up staying. We visited them recently, and were given a very warm welcome. We were encouraged by their thoughtful and enthusiastic support for the Evangelicals Division of SPUC. David and Agnes have two grown up daughters, both involved with churches, and both musicians like their father.

David began his working life in journalism, when he was involved with media relations for international companies. In 1978, he left industry and trained in systematic theology at Edinburgh University, gaining an honours degree. He then went into the pastorate for about 18 years, serving in three churches in Perthshire. David's life moved on and in 1999 he moved to Norfolk to work with Clifford Denton on the Cambrian Bible (Correspondence) College project.

In 2001, he moved to Bedford, and became managing editor of the Christian magazine Prophecy Today, until 2003 when he was appointed successor to Clifford Hill as editor.

In 2004 it became clear that the Lord required a new direction for the magazine - speaking more towards the faith of the church than the rebellion of the nation, and it became SWORD Magazine. Such a radical change was tested through submission to the ministry's prayer network and the Lord's confirmation came through clearly. David showed us several copies of the magazine printed over the last year, and it is certainly a high quality product with a clear pro-life commitment. The magazine is intended to support churches and pastors in our difficult days, and is centred on the Word of God, emphasising the centrality of the gospel, and the uniqueness of Jesus.

David is unashamedly pro-life, and has been for some time, and his work reflects this. He says that his interest in this pro-life work has increased considerably in the last year, and he has come to understand that abortion is a real dividing issue in politics.

Our own Peter Smith has written a number of articles for the magazine and David has kindly promised a discount for any SPUC Evangelical members who wish to subscribe. This 50% reduction applies to all new SPUC subscriptions. Please contact John McLaughlan in the SWORD office at Workspace House, 28-29 Maxwell Road, Peterborough, PE2 7JE. Telephone subscriptions are possible on 0844 414 0618.

We really do thank David for his undivided support, and look forward to working together in the future.
